*****Total Defence !:D

What is Total defence?
Total defence is a concept that was introduced by the government on 2nd April 1984.(SHOWN ON POWERPOINT)

Faeez says:
It was adapted from the experience in Switzerland and Sweden . We adopted it because we are a

young nation with a small population. Thus we need to involve every Singaporean to work

together to multiply our defence power. Then, we can protect our country and that we are in

as constant state of readiness to defend our country .

Jaynice says:
The British did not protect Singapore when it was at war as they were too busy protecting

their own country. This shows that we cannot rely on other countries for protection as they

will rather protect their country than Singapore . Also, when Japan bomed Singapore, people

were not prepared, this shows the importance of bomb shelters and evacuration drills .

Renald says :
Total Defence is made up of 5 defences such as :

-Military Defence is the readiness of the Singapore Armed Forces and the responsibility of

reservists, full-time national servicemen and regulars counter aggression.

-Civil Defence is ensuring that in times of emergencies, the safety and basic needs of the

community will be met. It means that the civilian population is in a preparedness state and

well-trained in rescue work, evacuation and first-aid .

-Social Defence is to build the bonds for racial harmony and reinforces national integration

in a multi-racial society, so that a strong nation of committed citizens will emerge .

-Economical Defence ensures that the competing demands of the military and the economy can

be accommodated in times of crises such as war .

-Psycological Defence builds on national pride and identity towards one’s nation.

Vanessa says:
How can we contribute to Total Defence?

We can contribute towards total defence by joining in the army although it is complusory for

men, women can join and play a part too. We can also participate in fire drills which are

organised by community clubs .We should not participate in rioting with others citizens or

racism. We can also upgrade our knowledge so we can remain employable. Such as signing up for

courses which are offered to you organised by community clubs .

******WHY SHOULD WAR BE AVOIDED ! :D

Dillon :
Okays now,we will move to the part about the other topic why war should be avoided.

What are the consequences of war?
-Many people will die and be seperated from their loved ones .
-There will be a bad relationship in between countries .
-They will have to spend money to rebuild the country after the war .
-Many houses and buildings might been desroyed .
-There will also be alot of casualties on both sides of the countries .

Weiling :
Well,How can we avoid having war?
-We can avoid war by making friends and not enemies with other countries by signing peace

treaties and avoid offending other countries. We can also try to corroborate with countries to

organise events such as the recent event on Youth Olympics 2010.
- Our government can also often go for visits to our neighbouring countries to foster good

relationships .

Good morning/afternoon my fellow classmates, today we are here to present our project on total defence. Our project question is ‘Why is total defence important and why war should be avoided?’.

We had done research on questions that are related to total defence, such as World War II and Japanese Occupation which are related to total defence. I guess we did managed to answer the project work questions through our documentary. We showcased of our interviews with different people like tourists and people who worked at fort canning. We also posted alot of our reflections on blog about how we managed to answer the project work questions.

Okay now, we will be showing our documentary before we explain how we did the documentary. *Showing of documentary*

*Showing the second time while talking. Let’s start talking about our documentary. We discussed alot on doing a documentary. We tried to act it out unsuccessfully. So, we decided to shoot related facts about our project question instead of acting it out. We focused on why war should be avoided. The main concept is that we tried to put our focus on interviews with different people like tourists on their views of war and why war should be avoided. Honestly, we did not really follow the storyboard, as we only decided last minute to shoot only related facts about total defence and war and also interviews. For example; there will be one scene on the surrender chambers and think that surrender of our own country is not the right thing to do, as well as to showcase of the surrender of Singapore to Japanese. On the other hand, it tells Singaporeans that surrendering own country is not right. We also like to take the chance of doing this documentary to pass the message that total defence is really important, and war should be avoided as there will be alot of casualties. Also, we used the bold and large fonts to emphasize on the importance of why war should be avoided.

Now, Faeez and Jaynice will be sharing his experience of video shooting and photo taking.

*Faeez sharing his experience*

*Jaynice sharing her experience*

*Reflections of our members* *Showcase of powerpoint slides while sharing our reflections*

We have come to the end of our presentation, hope you will like it. Thankyou. :D

Draft Script For Presentation(:

Good morning/afternoon my fellow classmates, today we are here to present our project on total defence. Our project question is why is total defence important and why war should be avoided. Okays, we did not do much research as we think the answers are quite obvious like, we can straight away get the answer, But, we still search about total defence.

All those questions related to total defence, for example;  we had search about World War II, which kind of related to total defence. And also about Japanese Occupation.  We did research on all this things, as we think that if we did not protect Singapore well, it may be like what happened in Japanese Occupation. And also, I guess we did managed to answer the project work questions through our documentary. We showcased of our interviews with different people like, tourists and people who worked at fort canning. We also posted alot of our reflections on blog about how we managed to answer the project work questions.

Okay, now, we will talk about our roles and responsibilities of every member. For our group leader,  Faeez, he was the one who is responsible of our video shooting. He will also phone us to discuss about the project. As for Dillon, he is the one who did most of the research online. And he posted things like mind maps and drafts for the presentation on our work last time. As for, Weiling, she did post about the questions on total defence and sometimes if we manage to post questions on blog, she will response very fast. She also helped us take a few shots of photos she think that is important during our trip to fort canning. Renald helped us to brainstorm alot of ideas on the storyboarding for our first trip to sentosa. He also helped Faeez with the video editing in fort canning.

As for Vanessa, she is the one who posted alot of things as she’s the one who needs to update our blog daily. She also helped Jaynice with the photo taking. She also did research on our project. She also contributed alot of ideas to our group on how to do a presentation and editing of videos. As for Jaynice, although she’s unable to be online everyday, she is the one who helped us to take most of the photos in fort canning. And she did alot of editing on our documentary and photos,
she also did some editings to the script that we need to present. Even if someone in the group did not contribute, we will try to tell him/her to buck up, and try to post things on blog.

We will also encourage them to tell us the problems they are facing and told them we will try to help them with their individual problems. So, if we notice someone has not been posting recently, we will ask them to post something. We encounted alot of problems at first. We did not managed our time properly. We were all doing our own things, we did not discussed properly our time line. And we have problems communicating with one another, sometimes we will even quarrel with small little things that we don’t agree with one another. However, we will still try to share our views and discussed it properly. And also our first trip to Sentosa, it rained unfortunately.

So, we have to stayed at the Surrender chambers to wait for the rain stop. That moment, we really felt that we were so unlucky.  But, we still sit at one corner to discuss the next step of thing we should do. So, in the end, we shot a short little video in the surrender chambers. Sometimes even if we had problems, we will sit down as a group or chat on messenger on the problems we encounted. We will arranged a suitable time for everyone and discuss our problems and try to solve it.

Okay, now we will be talking about our documentary. We discussed alot on doing a documentary. We tried acting out, but unsuccessfully. We also like to take the chance of doing this documentary to pass the message that total defence is really important, and war should be avoided as there will be alot of casualties.

About Presentation(:

Please, everyone. Our presentation is on Thursday. So, please please please, do make preparations. Okay? I will be posting things related to the presentation. So, everyone else, please also kindly post something related to the topics below. Thank you.

<br>

a) What’s your project question /task and what is your understanding of this question? How have you
managed to answer this project question through the project research and work you have done?

b) What were the roles and responsibilities of each member and what was done to ensure that
everyone contributed? What problems were encountered and how did you solve these as a group?

c) Explain your concept of the documentary and how does this documentary answer the project task
focus or question. Explain clearly why you have chosen to present the dicumentary in this way ,
explain the ideas behind the way you plan the storyboard, the different scenes and why certain
scenes are chosen and what you intend to show with these ( include details abt camera angles/shot
types, music, narration text, sequence of scenes, focus of video and what is the message you wish to
communicate). The same questions can be applied for the photo journal

d) Reflection on Learning – must be specific in terms of what skills esp thinking skills, analysis skills,
planning skills, team management skills, visual skills, history skills, language related like writing
skills, presenting information etc
And also, the reflections, please post about it and i guess you might have to read it out during presentations. And some discussions.

<br>

1)Are we going to showcase our documentary?

2) Who is going to present? For me, i personally think that, Faeez and Renald can present, as their voices are loud enough. And the rest of us, will also present, but is present about our reflections. Is that okay?

3) About the storyboard, i think we don’t have any right?

4) And also the camera angles/shots, i think we should post on it. Like for example, if we can remember any camera angles/shots, we can list it down also.

5) One last thing, the project questions all this, i will try to post it on blog by today. And, maybe i will try to print it out for the presenters to read. Is that okay?

<br>

Lastly, please respond to this post as it is very very important. Thank you :D

English Assignment

I think that this picture is suitable to be the setting of ‘To Kill A Mockingbird’ as it is like a old town which best fits the sentence in the novel about the Maycomb Town-”Maycomb was an old town when I first knew it. In rainy weather the streets turned to red slop; grass grew on the sidewalks, the court-house sagged in the square. Somehow, it was hotter then; a black dog suffered on a summer’s day; bony mules hitched to Hoover carts flicked flies in the sweltering shade of the live oaks on the square.”

By WeiLing

To Kill A MockingBird -

I think this picture is suitable and will be about the same in Alabama because technology is not really advanced in the 1930s. The houses should be old and small at that time as they are poor.
